I just moved to the desert and I'm facinated...I feel like saguaros (pronounced /səˈwɑroʊ/) have a lot to teach me...
Growing a mere one foot in the first 45 years of life, saguaros take a risk living in the desert. It definitely feels like I'm growing too slowly, at times.
These dancing saguaros produce beautiful crowns of flowers and vibrant magenta fruit right before the monsoon rains wash them away in the hopes of finding a place to grow.

Just when I think nothing is happing - KA-POW! - I've got blooms in my life! Turns out, I was storing nutrients, water, and energy, getting ready for the next step, or perhaps waiting for the monsoon rains. :)
See a saguaro with one arm?? That took 75 years to grow!
Which brings out the whole nature geek side of me wanting to truly know about the saguaro and it's natural history. What range do they grow in, why do their flowers bloom at night, who is their pollinator, are there different forms or species, can you transplant them?
I guess all of these questions are just like the questions I ask about myself... about how I think or why I do the things I do. Heh-heh...can I be transplanted? Perhaps that is a topic for the next post...
